The Mission: Sustainability

Pegasus Equestrian Resort & Venue is slated to become a world-class equestrian destination. With as many as five indoor arenas, numerous outdoor grass and sand arenas, four grass polo fields, the first 5-star eventing course on the West Coast and a luxury on-site resort and spa, Pegasus Equestrian Resort & Venue will make a large impact on the local tourism industry, the West Coast horse show industry and the equestrian industry world-wide. However, Pegasus does plan to leave one area unaffected: the environment.

While building an internationally-renowned equestrian venue is impossible without some environmental impact, the Pegasus team plans for the venue to give back as much as it takes, plus more. The sustainability focus remains at the forefront of the project from site selection through completion of construction, and will remain in place for years to come.

As the Pegasus Equestrian Resort & Venue project enters the design phase, the team is planning the site around the current environment and topography to ensure the least impact possible. Major buildings and roadways are being planned around the picturesque rolling hills, rather than trying to place major aspects of the site in locations that would require flattening the land.

Along with taking the current environment into consideration, the team is planning to introduce additions to the site that will help the environment thrive. The site will have its own water source in the form of a reservoir, and will utilize rainwater collection to ensure the water supply is plentiful. Other sustainable resources like solar and wind will be implemented with the overarching goal of a negative carbon footprint.

The team also plans to implement regenerative grazing at Pegasus Equestrian Resort & Venue, which involves rotating herds of grazing animals through smaller sections of a pasture several times per day, grazing an entire pasture over the course of several weeks.  This helps prevent overgrazing and allows the sections not being grazed to regenerate while the land rests.

An often overlooked aspect of sustainability, Pegasus Equestrian Resort & Venue is being designed with longevity in mind when it comes to site selection. Many horse show venues today are falling victim to urban encroachment, being forced to sell to developers due to loss of resources or monetary motivation. The 2,800+ acre Pegasus Equestrian Resort & Venue site was selected with this in mind. The rural location, along with the abundance of land the site encompasses and Oregon’s strong land use laws, ensure that urban encroachment will not drive the venue out of its location. Urban encroachment is also prevalent in subdivided communities, however the Pegasus team’s decision to not be a real estate driven site eliminates that possibility. Taking all sustainability aspects into consideration during site selection, planning and construction allows the Pegasus team to build a venue that will suit equestrians for generations to come.
